Bieiris de Romans (or Bietris or Beatritz) (first half of the thirteenth century) was an Occitan trobairitz.
LifetimeNo Life of Bieiris de Romans or documents that give information about it is preserved. Apparently she was originally from Romans-sur-Isere. Actually, in the only manuscript that has preserved his poetry, the rubric says Bieris de R., but is supposed to refer to Romans. The chronology of his poetic production is uncertain, but is usually placed in the first half of the 13th century.
In song T, the only song preserved from this trobairitz, Na Maria, pretz [e] fine valors is preserved. The fact that he directs a love song to another woman (Na Maria, who has not been identified with certainty) has attracted the attention and the scholars have alluded to a possible lesbianism between Bieris and Maria, or, they have associated the name to the Virgin; even, some have believed that the author of this poetry is actually a man. Angelica Rieger believes that it is indeed a poem from one woman to another woman as a manifestation of tenderness, but one must understand it within the courteous code, without implying lesbianism.
