The Consortium of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona is a consortium that groups 36 municipalities of the province of Barcelona around the city of the same name and which exercises metropolitan government but only part of the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
It was approved in 2010 by the Parliament of Catalonia with the name of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (not to be confused with the geographical area of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area or with the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona). The former metropolitan government, Metropolitan Corporation of Barcelona, was suppressed in 1987 by the Generalitat of Catalonia presided over by Jordi Pujol (CiU).
