Wilfried Elzinga


Wilfried Elzinga (Westerhaar, August 11, 1969) is a Dutch former football player who competed in FC Twente and BVO Emmen during his active career.

Elzinga played for VV Voorwaarts from Westerhaar in his youth, but in 1985 he made the transition to the youth of FC Twente. He came out for national representative teams in his age class. As of 1987/88 season he was transferred to the selection of the first team and on 27 March 1988 he made his debut in the Eredivisie in an outing against Willem II. From the 1988/89 season, Elzinga had a fixed value as a judge in the Tukkers team.

He was selected for the Olympic team and Jong Oranje and won with Twente in two consecutive seasons of European football, eliminating the team by Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen respectively in the first round. Due to long-term injuries, Elzinga's career became in the wake of the 1991/92 season. In three years he played in only nineteen league games. From 1994 he came to the field more often, but he had no fixed base. In 1997 he transferred to BVO Emmen in the First Division, where he signed a contract for three years.

Elzinga played two seasons for Emmen. Here too he struggled with injury. In April 1999, he terminated his career as a paid football player and allowed himself to transfer to Sunday Chief Classifier AGOVV.
