The Mother (Nielsen)

The Mother (Danish: Mother), Opus 41 / FS94, by Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) is drama music written for the same theater work by Helge Rode.

The piece of patriotic content has been written for the festivities on the occasion of re-connecting the provinces of South Jutland and Schleswig-Holstein to Denmark in 1920. The premiere of Moderne took place on 30 January 1921 in the Royal Copenhagen Theater.

The music mainly consists of songs for men's voice, accompanied by orchestra. The play had little success with the audience, but Nielsen's music did. There are three instrumental pieces from the stage music, which are played regularly as Tre uddag from Moderne (Three parts from The Mother). They last only 5 minutes and each have their own instrumentation: Source and discography
